Why does it all happen at once?

We are waiting for word, most likely by the end of next week, on my dad's tests. Thanks for all your kind words of support. Now we just have to wait. And hope for the only Christmas present I really want.

Me, CG, Zoe and Sweet Dog are all piling into the Prius on Friday for a cozy 8 hour drive to Arizona for the holidays. And we still haven't introduced Zoe to TV. Anyone want to bet how long we last until we're pulling into the closest Best Buy (oh wait, did they just go belly up?) for a portable DVD player? What would be a good starter video for those prone to STARING glassy eyed at the rare glimpse of television? One that won't rot her brain or make us want to pull over and shoot ourselves.

I have spent the last few days googling things like "first foods after vomiting" and "best way to sanitize toys after stomach flu". FUN. (And for you? Do you go the vinegar route or just say F the environment and go right for the bleach?)

After many a fretful conversation and a sleepless week when we thought we might have to move in JANUARY, we have decided to accept a big job offer for CG. That means we will be moving from California to Virginia (not the "real Virginia" though) next August. With our house full of junk, two cars, a dog, a toddler, a THREE MONTH OLD and me, barely clinging to my sanity, no doubt. Anyone live in Virginia? How's the weather out there these days? I'm pretty sure I'm looking at a whole new wardrobe here.

Why do the holidays always seem to get wrapped up with a whole lot of other stress?

We have a portable DVD player, and M just suggested getting a second one (for Midgette, who is five months old!!!).

Big congratulations to CG, and best of luck with moving, selling your house, and keeping your sanity with an infant in tow.

For non-driving-parents-crazy kids' TV, I like the Baby Mozart and Baby Bach and Baby Beethoven DVDs. The only sound is classical music, so it's good for in the background---but the pictures of spinning toys mesmerize the children.

We live in MD, and it's pretty nice here. Temperature-wise, we're usually on par with San Fran, I think.

WOW! i will email you with my 'moving across the country survival guide' also known as "how we moved 4 times in one year without completely losing our minds or getting a divorce".

I will also give you my opinions on tv shows for kids, and i'm pretty picky.

I like the sesame street dvd's- NOT the elmo ones OH GOD NO, but the ones with just the episodes. My 2 year old also likes Blues Clues, and they are pretty tame to overhear in the car... perhaps spring for a headset for her (if you think she'll keep it on)- she'll be mezmorized AND you'll have silence to visit. BLISS. =)

Man, your dad, a HUGE move, Christmas... you do have a lot on your plate right now. Hang in there!

I moved from LA to Chicago with a 2 month old. It wasn't as awful as I had geared myself up for and the baby did much better than I thought he would. It's a lot, but you can do it!

WOW. You have a serious lot going on. I'm still sending good thoughts your way for your Dad. Sorry about the flu. YUCK. Good luck on the drive!

Hope all is well with your father; I am sorry to hear that he is even being tested.

Wow. Moving and a new baby and Christmas and your dad... Rough stuff always comes in patches. Here's hoping your dad is fine, moving goes better than expected, and the new baby is a GREAT sleeper!
I second Swistle's suggestion on the Baby Einstein videos. They're easily tuned out by adults, but riveting to children. And semi-educational. Or at least, probably not actually brain warping.

I have been meaning to write a much longer email response but have been having technical difficulties. So here is the Cliff Notes version...

I AM SO SAD YOU WILL BE LEAVING CA. I know I rarely get to see you, but somehow having you on this coast is comforting. But, I think you will like Virginia. It is closer to your family, full of people with east coast sensibilities and a very beautiful place. Plus you will be an easy drive to one of my favorite places... the outer banks of NC. And I know many people that are living in or have lived in Virginia that I am happy to connect you with. But it is also a lot to deal with at once. Hang in there. I'll write more soon...
